01 / LIFE & CONTEXT

Two projects of the 1970s placed Tom L. Beauchamp (1939–2025) at the intersection of public research policy and academic biomedical ethics. After completing his PhD at Johns Hopkins, he joined Georgetown and the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. As staff philosopher for the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research, he wrote much of the Belmont Report. At the same time, he and James F. Childress were developing Principles of Biomedical Ethics.

02 / KEY CONTRIBUTIONS

The Belmont Report articulated respect for persons, beneficence, and justice for research involving human subjects. In Principles of Biomedical Ethics, Beauchamp and Childress developed the widely taught framework of autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, and justice. Beauchamp's scholarship also pursued consent, moral theory, animal ethics, and the difficult work of specifying broad principles for particular cases.

03 / HISTORICAL ROLE

Beauchamp's influence lies in the movement of ethical principles between commission deliberation, regulation, scholarship, and teaching. The frameworks he worked on became common points of reference, even for critics of principle-based bioethics.
