01 / LIFE & CONTEXT
Thomasine K. Kushner's bioethical work grew across university, clinical, and international settings. At Berkeley she worked with the Committee for Protection of Human Subjects, taught in the UCSF/Berkeley Joint Medical Program, and was a research fellow at the Human Rights Center. She later held clinical bioethics roles while remaining engaged in international education and scholarship.
02 / KEY CONTRIBUTIONS
Kushner founded and co-edited the Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, making it a forum for scholars across countries, disciplines, and ethical traditions. Her writing and teaching addressed clinical ethics, physician-assisted dying, research protections, and international health-care ethics. Editorial work and conferences sustained exchanges that individual publications alone could not provide.
03 / HISTORICAL ROLE
The field's international conversation required venues and relationships, not simply a wider list of topics. Kushner's editorial and educational work helped build that scholarly infrastructure as bioethics matured beyond its early American institutions.
